Planeaarsed, also known as planarians, are free-living flatworms in the phylum Platyhelminthes. They occur in a variety of moist habitats, including freshwater streams and ponds, damp terrestrial environments, and, in some groups, marine settings. A few marine species exist alongside the more familiar freshwater forms.

They have a simple body plan: soft, ribbon-like to oval bodies typically a few millimeters to a few centimeters long. They move using cilia on the ventral surface and muscular contractions. The nervous system is relatively simple but well organized, featuring a pair of cerebral ganglia and longitudinal nerve cords that produce rudimentary cephalization. Many species possess eyespots that sense light.

The digestive system consists of a single pharynx on the ventral side connected to a highly branched gut, allowing distribution of nutrients to tissues. Planarians feed on small invertebrates, dead animals, and detritus, depending on the species and habitat.

A defining feature of planeaarsed is their extraordinary regenerative capacity. They possess abundant pluripotent stem cells called neoblasts that can replace missing tissue. If cut into pieces, each fragment can regenerate into a complete individual. This regeneration is studied to understand developmental biology and stem cell biology, with signaling pathways such as Wnt/β-catenin playing a role in head-tail identity during regeneration.

Reproduction varies among species. Most are hermaphroditic and can reproduce sexually by cross-fertilization. Many freshwater planarians also reproduce asexually by transverse fission or fragmentation, enabling rapid population growth under favorable conditions.

Ecology and research significance: planarians are important model organisms for studying regeneration, tissue patterning, and stem-cell dynamics. Terrestrial species, often called land planarians or hammerhead worms, are carnivorous and can be invasive in gardens.
