It does not refer to a single device, but to instruments and systems that evaluate properties of flat plates to ensure they meet specification requirements.

Thickness measurement on plates can be performed with ultrasonic thickness gauges, which send sound waves through the material to determine overall thickness, and with magnetic or eddy current gauges for conductive materials.
