Plaaster is a material used for coating walls and ceilings. It is typically made from a mixture of lime, sand, and water, although modern plaasters often include cement or gypsum for increased strength and faster drying times. The purpose of plaaster is to create a smooth, even surface that can be decorated, providing a finish for structural elements and improving interior aesthetics. It can also be used to conceal imperfections, protect underlying materials, and contribute to the thermal and acoustic insulation of a building.

The application of plaaster is a skilled trade, often referred to as plastering or rendering. It is usually applied in multiple coats. The first coat, known as the scratch coat, is applied to a rough surface and scratched to provide a key for subsequent layers. The second coat, or brown coat, is applied to level the surface and provide a base for the final coat. The final coat, or skim coat, is a thin layer of fine plaster that creates a smooth, paintable surface. Variations in plaaster include decorative finishes, such as textured or colored plaasters, and specialized types for specific applications like fire-resistant or waterproof plaasters. Historically, plaaster was a common building material, and many older buildings still feature original plaasterwork.
