A pitchout is a defensive strategy in baseball and softball where the pitcher intentionally throws the ball outside the strike zone to prevent a batter from making contact with a powerful swing. This is often employed in situations where the batter is a significant threat, such as a strong hitter with runners on base, or when the pitcher needs to avoid giving up a home run. The goal is to force the batter to chase a pitch they are unlikely to hit effectively, ideally resulting in a strikeout or a weak ground ball or fly ball.

The pitchout can also be used to prevent a stolen base attempt. If a runner on base is known for their speed or is attempting to advance on a specific pitch, the catcher might call for a pitchout. This gives the catcher extra time to receive the pitch and throw to the intended base, increasing the chances of a successful pickoff or caught stealing. The ball is typically thrown wide of home plate, making it difficult for the batter to swing and providing the catcher with a clear throwing lane.

While effective in certain scenarios, a pitchout carries risks. If the pitch is too far outside, it can result in a walk, putting a runner on base. Additionally, a well-disciplined batter might recognize the pitchout and refrain from swinging, potentially leading to a ball and advancing the count. The decision to execute a pitchout is therefore strategic and depends heavily on the game situation, the players involved, and the pitcher's and catcher's assessment of the risk versus reward.
