Pitchforandring refers to the alteration of the perceived pitch of an audio signal. It is commonly described in terms of pitch shifting, where pitch is changed while duration is kept roughly constant, and time-stretched pitch shifting, where both pitch and duration may be altered. The concept is used in music production, sound design, and speech processing to transpose melodies, adjust vocal lines, or modify prosody.

Technically, pitchforandring can be achieved through several approaches. In the time domain, techniques such as PSOLA (Pitch-Synchronous Overlap-Add) modify pitch by changing the spacing of short analysis-synthesis segments. In the frequency domain, phase vocoders manipulate the spectrum to shift pitch while preserving duration. Resampling changes pitch by altering the playback rate, and granular synthesis uses small grains to reassemble the signal with a new pitch. Modern tools often combine these methods to balance quality and computational efficiency. Formant-preserving pitch-shifting aims to keep vocal tract characteristics intact to avoid unnatural sounding vowels.

Formants and perceptual quality are central concerns. Naive pitch shifting can distort formant structure, making voices sound “chipmunked” or muffled. Formant-preserving algorithms attempt to adjust spectrum components so that vocal timbre remains natural, especially important for singing voices.

Applications include music production (transposition, harmonization, effects), vocal processing (tuning and correction), dubbing and speech synthesis, and various research contexts in linguistics and acoustics. Artifacts such as spectral smearing, phasiness, or robotic timbres can occur, particularly with large pitch shifts or real-time processing.
