Pimeänäkölaiteiden, often translated as night vision devices, are optical instruments that allow individuals to see in low-light conditions or complete darkness. They achieve this by amplifying existing ambient light or by emitting their own invisible light source.

There are two primary types of pimeänäkölaiteiden. Image intensification devices work by gathering and amplifying faint light sources, such as starlight or moonlight. This amplified light is then converted into a visible image, typically displayed in a greenish hue. The more light available, the clearer the image will be.

The second type is thermal imaging devices. These instruments detect infrared radiation, or heat, emitted by objects. All objects with a temperature above absolute zero emit thermal radiation. Thermal imagers translate this radiation into a visual representation, often displayed in shades of grey or false colors, where different colors represent different temperature ranges. This allows them to see in complete darkness, as well as through fog, smoke, and other obscurants that would hinder image intensifiers.

Pimeänäkölaiteiden have a wide range of applications. They are commonly used by military and law enforcement for surveillance, navigation, and tactical operations. Hunters and wildlife observers utilize them to track animals at night. They are also employed in search and rescue operations and by individuals who need to navigate in low-visibility environments.
