Pildisensorile, often referred to as an image sensor, is a crucial component in digital imaging devices such as cameras, smartphones, and scanners. Its primary function is to convert light signals into electrical signals, which are then processed to create a digital image. Essentially, it acts as the electronic equivalent of film in traditional photography.

There are two main types of image sensors: CCD (Charge-Coupled Device) and CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor). CCD sensors were historically favored for their image quality and low noise, but CMOS sensors have largely overtaken them due to their lower power consumption, faster readout speeds, and lower manufacturing costs. The sensor is composed of a grid of millions of tiny light-sensitive elements called pixels. Each pixel captures the intensity and color of light that falls upon it. When light strikes a pixel, it generates an electrical charge proportional to the light's brightness. This charge is then read out and converted into digital data, forming the image. The resolution of an image is determined by the number of pixels on the sensor. Higher pixel counts generally allow for more detailed images.
