Pikemaks is a fictional species described in the fantasy setting of the Ardent Sea. It refers to a semi-aquatic arthropod found in the brackish lagoons of the northern archipelago, where it plays a notable role in local ecology and folklore.

Description: Adults measure about 5–7 cm in length, with a flattened, segmented body and a hardened exoskeleton that ranges from olive to bluish-gray. They have elongated rostrum-like antennae and a series of bioluminescent organs along the thorax that emit a pale blue light at dusk.

Behaviour and ecology: Pikemaks are omnivorous detritivores, feeding on algae, microscopic detritus, and small invertebrates. They inhabit mangrove roots and reed beds, often moving in loose schools. They are diurnal in clear conditions but become more crepuscular in turbid water, using their glow to communicate and deter predators.

Reproduction and development: Breeding occurs in shallow brackish waters in late spring. Eggs are laid on submerged roots and hatch into nymphs that pass through several juvenile instars over 1–2 years before reaching adulthood. Lifespan is typically 3–4 years in captivity and somewhat shorter in the wild.

Cultural significance: In local folklore, pikemaks are believed to guide tides and protect fisherfolk. Their glow is used in night-time navigation and in decorative motifs. In the fantasy economy, they are sometimes kept in managed ponds for ecotourism and, for artisans, as a source of luminescent ink.
