Historically, pictographs appear in many cultures as early records of information. Cave paintings and petroglyphs depict animals, tools, and activities, serving communicative or ritual purposes. In the development of writing, many societies began with pictorial elements that eventually evolved into more complex systems combining phonetic and semantic components; for example, some sign sets in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and East Asia began as pictorial representations before becoming part of broader scripts.
