Phytosauriforms were a diverse group of large, semi-aquatic archosaurian reptiles that thrived during the Late Triassic and Early Jurassic periods, approximately 230 to 190 million years ago. Often mistaken for crocodiles due to superficial similarities, they were not closely related but shared a similar ecological niche as apex predators in freshwater and coastal environments. The name "phytosaur" derives from their elongated snouts, which resembled those of modern-day plants (Greek *phyton*), though this resemblance was coincidental.

Phytosauriforms exhibited a wide range of sizes, from small species like *Belodon* (around 1 meter long) to massive forms such as *Rutiodon* (reaching up to 6 meters). Their skulls were elongated, with numerous teeth adapted for grasping slippery prey, including fish, amphibians, and other reptiles. Some species, like *Mystriosaurus*, had specialized teeth for crushing shells, indicating a diet that included mollusks. Their bodies were streamlined, with strong limbs suited for both swimming and walking on land.

Fossil evidence suggests phytosauriforms were highly successful, dominating Triassic ecosystems until their decline during the Triassic-Jurassic extinction event. By the Early Jurassic, they had largely disappeared, replaced by crocodilians and other archosaurs. Their extinction may have been linked to environmental changes, competition, or the rise of more efficient predators. Despite their eventual decline, phytosauriforms remain important in understanding the evolutionary dynamics of early archosaurs and the ecological transitions of the Mesozoic Era.
