Phytosauriforms
Phytosauriforms were a diverse group of large, semi-aquatic archosaurian reptiles that thrived during the Late Triassic and Early Jurassic periods, approximately 230 to 190 million years ago. Often mistaken for crocodiles due to superficial similarities, they were not closely related but shared a similar ecological niche as apex predators in freshwater and coastal environments. The name "phytosaur" derives from their elongated snouts, which resembled those of modern-day plants (Greek *phyton*), though this resemblance was coincidental.
Phytosauriforms exhibited a wide range of sizes, from small species like *Belodon* (around 1 meter long) to
Fossil evidence suggests phytosauriforms were highly successful, dominating Triassic ecosystems until their decline during the Triassic-Jurassic
