Belodon

Belodon is an extinct genus of rauisuchian archosaur that lived during the Triassic period. Fossils of Belodon have been found in Europe and North America. It is classified within the order Pseudosuchia, a group of reptiles that includes modern crocodiles and their extinct relatives. Belodon was a terrestrial predator, likely preying on smaller animals. Its exact position within pseudosuchian phylogeny has been debated, with some researchers placing it within the Rauisuchidae family, while others have suggested alternative classifications.

The remains of Belodon indicate a medium-sized animal, estimated to be around 5 to 6 meters in length. Its skull was relatively long and narrow, with sharp teeth adapted for tearing flesh. Like other rauisuchians, Belodon possessed a robust build and likely walked on four sturdy legs. The forelimbs were shorter than the hindlimbs, suggesting a somewhat sprawling gait. The tail was probably long and used for balance.

Discoveries of Belodon fossils, including well-preserved skulls and skeletal elements, have provided valuable insights into the diversity of terrestrial fauna during the Late Triassic. This period was a time of significant evolutionary change, leading up to the emergence of the dinosaurs. Belodon represents one of the apex predators of its ecosystem before the rise of the dinosaurs to dominance.
