A physical birthmark is a visible mark on the skin that is present at or appears shortly after birth. These marks vary widely in appearance, color, and size. They can be flat or raised, smooth or textured, and their color can range from pale pink or red to brown, blue, or even purple. Birthmarks are generally categorized into two main types: vascular birthmarks and pigmented birthmarks.

Vascular birthmarks are caused by abnormal blood vessels in or under the skin. Examples include salmon patches, often called "stork bites" or "angel kisses," which are usually faint red or pink marks that fade over time. More prominent vascular birthmarks are hemangiomas, which can grow rapidly and then shrink or disappear. Port-wine stains are another type, appearing as flat, reddish-purple marks that do not fade and may darken with age.

Pigmented birthmarks are caused by an overgrowth of pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) in the skin. Moles, also known as nevi, are a common example. They can be present at birth or appear later. Café-au-lait spots are flat, light brown to dark brown patches that are usually present from birth. Mongolian spots are bluish-gray patches, most common in individuals with darker skin tones, and typically fade in childhood.

Most birthmarks are benign and do not require treatment. However, some may be associated with underlying medical conditions or can cause cosmetic concerns, leading to considerations for medical intervention or cosmetic procedures. It is always advisable to have a birthmark evaluated by a healthcare professional to determine its type and rule out any potential complications.
