Ethical considerations include accuracy, fairness, avoiding manipulation, obtaining consent when possible, respecting privacy and dignity, and contextualizing images to prevent misinterpretation. They adhere to professional codes, such as the SPJ Code of Ethics or journalistic guidelines in their country.

Equipment and techniques involve using digital cameras, a range of lenses, lighting tools, and protective gear; employing composition, timing, and moment selection; and post-processing to ensure faithful representation within ethical bounds. They often work in rapidly changing situations—conflicts, disasters, politics, sports, culture—and must prioritize safety and legal clearance, including press credentials and location releases.

History and impact: Photojournalism emerged with the growth of newspapers and illustrated magazines in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and evolved through iconic images that shaped public perception.
