SPJ

The Society of Professional Journalists, abbreviated SPJ, is a United States–based nonprofit professional association for journalists and journalism educators. It aims to promote ethics, diversity, and excellence in journalism through education, advocacy, and professional resources. The organization operates through a national structure with a network of local chapters that provide programming and community for members.

SPJ was founded in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, by a group of journalism students who sought to uphold high professional standards and ongoing development within the field. Over time it expanded to include a broader membership of working journalists and educators and broadened its mission to address issues such as ethics, open government, and press freedom. In 1996 the organization adopted the current name, SPJ, reflecting its national scope and professional focus.

Today, SPJ conducts education and professional development programs, mentors aspiring journalists, and provides career resources. It publishes and maintains a Code of Ethics widely used in the field, promotes press freedom and open government, and offers scholarships, internships, and grants to support journalistic training and innovation. The association also runs conventions, regional events, and awards programs to recognize excellence in journalism across various media platforms.

Membership is open to professionals, students, educators, and freelancers, with participation organized through national leadership and local chapters. SPJ serves as a professional community, a resource for ethical guidance, and a voice in advocacy on issues affecting journalism and access to information.
