Phorusrhacids, commonly known as terror birds, were a group of extinct predatory flightless birds that lived in South America from the Paleocene to the Pleistocene epochs. These formidable creatures ranged in size from approximately 1 to 3 meters (3.3 to 9.8 feet) tall. Their most distinctive feature was a large, hooked beak, which they likely used to deliver powerful blows to their prey. Phorusrhacids possessed strong legs and were presumably fast runners, enabling them to pursue their victims.

The exact diet of phorusrhacids is debated, but their predatory adaptations suggest they were apex predators in their ecosystems. They may have hunted small mammals, reptiles, and other birds. Fossil evidence indicates a wide distribution across South America, with different species occupying various ecological niches. Some of the larger species, like Kelenken guillermoi, are among the largest birds known to have ever existed.
