The vaginal discharge may become more noticeable, and the vulva remains enlarged. The female may show heightened curiosity or agitation around males, but still does not accept mating.

Late proestrus: Estrogen remains high as the cycle approaches estrus. Reproductive tract tissues are prepared for potential fertilization, and signs of nearing receptivity can appear, such as increased interest in males and changes in posture or attention. Mating, however, is generally still avoided until estrus.

Duration and variation: The length of proestrus varies widely among species and individuals. In some domestic animals (notably dogs), proestrus typically lasts about 7 to 10 days but can be shorter or longer. The exact timing of transitions between proestrus and estrus depends on hormonal dynamics and species-specific physiology.
