Pharmacopeiation is the process by which pharmacopoeias—the authoritative compendia of drug quality standards—are created, maintained, and applied. The practice defines the quality expectations for medicines, their ingredients, and related substances, including identity, purity, potency, dosage forms, labeling, and analytical methods. Through pharmacopeiation, regulators, manufacturers, and researchers rely on standardized monographs to assess whether products meet accepted criteria.

Historically, pharmacopoeias originated to ensure medicinal quality and consistency, and modern pharmacopeiation is coordinated by international and national bodies. Prominent pharmacopoeias include the United States Pharmacopeia–National Formulary (USP–NF), the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Limitations may include regional variation in standards, incomplete coverage of traditional or herbal medicines, and the time required to update monographs.
