A phalanstère, or phalanstery, was a type of cooperative living and working community envisioned by French utopian socialist Charles Fourier. Fourier proposed that a phalanstère would be a self-sufficient agricultural and industrial commune, housing around 1,600 to 2,000 people. The core idea was to organize society around human passions and desires, allowing individuals to pursue work that suited their inclinations. These communities were designed to foster social harmony, economic equality, and the abolition of poverty.
