A phalanstery, also known as a phalanstère, was a type of communal living building proposed by the French utopian socialist Charles Fourier in the early 19th century. Fourier envisioned these structures as the central element of his ideal society, the phalanx. Each phalanstery would house approximately 1,500 to 2,000 individuals, forming a self-sufficient agricultural and industrial community.
