phainopeplus

Phainopeplus is a genus of passerine birds in the family Sturnidae, the starlings and oxpeckers. The genus contains only one species, Phainopeplus nitens, commonly known as the black-winged or velvet-fronted starling. This bird is native to parts of North America.

The black-winged starling is a small to medium-sized bird, typically measuring around 20 to 24 centimeters in length. Adult males are predominantly glossy black with iridescent blue-green plumage, particularly on the wings and tail. They also possess a distinctive patch of velvety, dark red feathers on their forehead, which gives them one of their common names. Females are generally a duller brownish-gray color, lacking the iridescent sheen and the prominent red forehead patch. Both sexes have bright yellow eyes.

These birds inhabit open woodlands, shrublands, and riparian areas. Their diet primarily consists of insects, fruits, and nectar. They are often observed foraging in flocks, especially outside the breeding season. The black-winged starling is known for its melodious and varied vocalizations, which can include whistles, trills, and mimicry. They build cup-shaped nests in trees or shrubs and typically lay clutches of 3-5 eggs. The species is migratory, with populations in the northern parts of its range moving south for the winter.
