Phaëthon (Greek: Φαέθων) is a figure from Greek mythology, best known as the son of the Titan Helios and the Oceanid Clymene. He is most famously associated with the myth of his failed attempt to drive the sun chariot of his father. According to legend, Helios had warned Phaëthon that the chariot was too dangerous to control, but the young man insisted on proving his divine lineage by attempting the task. Despite his father’s warnings, Phaëthon lost control of the chariot, causing the sun’s path to stray from its usual course. This disruption led to scorching heat on Earth, drying up rivers and causing widespread destruction. Zeus, fearing further catastrophe, struck Phaëthon with a thunderbolt, killing him instantly.

The myth of Phaëthon has been interpreted in various ways throughout history. Some scholars suggest it may symbolize the dangers of hubris, or excessive pride, while others see it as an explanation for natural phenomena such as solar eclipses or seasonal changes. The story was widely recounted in ancient literature, including works by Ovid in *Metamorphoses* and later adaptations in Renaissance and Baroque art.

Phaëthon’s name is derived from the Greek word *phaethōn*, meaning "shining" or "radiant," reflecting his association with the sun. His myth has also inspired modern references in literature, film, and music, often as a cautionary tale about the consequences of recklessness. In some traditions, he is also linked to the constellation Scorpius, which was said to have been placed in the sky to punish him for his actions.
