Petefészekszindróma, also known as ovarian cyst syndrome, refers to a condition characterized by the development of cysts on the ovaries. These cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can form on or within the ovary. While many ovarian cysts are benign and resolve on their own without causing symptoms, some can grow larger or rupture, leading to discomfort or more serious complications.

The exact cause of petefészekszindróma is not always clear, but it is often related to the normal hormonal fluctuations of the menstrual cycle. These are called functional cysts and typically disappear within a few months. Other types of ovarian cysts can develop due to underlying conditions like endometriosis or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In rare cases, ovarian cysts can be cancerous.

Symptoms, if present, can vary widely. Many women with ovarian cysts experience no noticeable signs. When symptoms do occur, they may include pelvic pain or pressure, bloating, irregular menstrual periods, or pain during intercourse. Larger cysts or those that rupture or cause torsion (twisting of the ovary) can lead to sudden, severe pain, nausea, and vomiting.

Diagnosis usually involves a pelvic examination and imaging tests such as an ultrasound. Treatment depends on the type, size, and symptoms associated with the cyst. Small, asymptomatic functional cysts often require no treatment and are monitored. Larger or persistent cysts, or those causing significant symptoms, may be managed with hormonal therapy or surgical removal.
