Pestävyysmerkinnät refer to symbols or pictograms found on textiles and garments that indicate how to properly clean and care for the item. These labels are crucial for maintaining the quality and longevity of clothing, preventing damage from incorrect washing, drying, or ironing methods. The symbols are standardized internationally to ensure clear communication across different regions and languages.

The washing symbol typically depicts a basin of water with a number inside, representing the maximum washing temperature in degrees Celsius. A hand in the basin indicates hand washing is required, while a line underneath the basin signifies a gentle or permanent press cycle. Two lines underneath suggest a very mild wash. If the basin has a cross through it, the item should not be washed.

Drying symbols often show a square. A circle inside the square represents tumble drying. The number of dots within the circle indicates the heat setting, with one dot for low heat, two for medium, and three for high. A cross through the square and circle means the item should not be tumble dried. Air drying can be indicated by lines within the square, representing line drying, or a hanging shape for drip drying.

Bleaching is denoted by a triangular symbol. A plain triangle allows any type of bleach, while a triangle with diagonal lines permits non-chlorine bleach only. A cross through the triangle means bleaching is prohibited. Ironing symbols also use an iron pictogram, with dots inside representing heat levels: one dot for low, two for medium, and three for high. A cross through the iron symbol means ironing is not allowed. Professional cleaning symbols, often a circle, indicate if dry cleaning or wet cleaning is appropriate, with letters inside specifying the type of solvent or method to be used.
