Peryferie is a term used in urban geography and regional planning to describe the outer parts of a city, town, or metropolitan area where urban characteristics begin to give way to rural or semi-urban features. It designates the boundary zone between the denser city center and the surrounding countryside, and it can refer to city outskirts, metropolitan belts, or regional fringes. The concept is used to discuss patterns of land use, population distribution, accessibility, and the interaction between urban and rural domains.

The word derives from the idea of a peripheral area and is cognate with the English term “periphery.” In Polish usage, peryferie covers a range of locales at the urban fringe, including suburban neighborhoods, peri-urban zones, industrial parks on the edge of cities, farmland, and, in some cases, informal settlements that develop at the margin of urban areas.

Characteristics and social aspects of peryferie vary but often include lower population density relative to city cores, mixed land use, and uneven provision of infrastructure and public services such as transportation, healthcare, and education. Economic activity can be diverse, with residential areas adjacent to light industry, logistics facilities, or agricultural use. Peryferie regions are prone to changes driven by suburbanization, migration from urban centers, and shifts in employment patterns, making them focal points for planning and policy.

Planning and policy discussions address how to manage growth, improve transport links, upgrade utilities and services, and integrate peripheral areas into broader regional strategies. The term can carry stigmatizing connotations in media or policy contexts when used to label residents, so many planners prefer emphasizing peripheral development processes instead of fixed labels.
