Peruka is a term used in Indonesian and Malay to refer to a wig, a hairpiece worn on the head to cover hair loss, alter appearance, or complete a costume. Wigs are used for medical reasons such as alopecia or chemotherapy, as well as for fashion, theatre, and cosplay. The concept exists in many cultures, with a long history of wigs and hairpieces dating back to ancient civilizations and becoming prominent in European courts and modern fashion.

Wigs come in a variety of styles, materials, and cap constructions. Common materials include synthetic fibers (such as kanekalon or toyokalon) and human hair, or blends of both. Cap constructions include capless designs, lace-front wigs, full-lace wigs, and monofilament tops. Lace-front and full-lace styles provide a more natural hairline and part, while capless designs are lighter and breathable. Wigs also differ in length, curl pattern, and density, allowing a range of looks from natural to dramatic.

Fit and sizing are important for comfort and appearance. Wigs are usually offered in standard cap sizes (small, average, large) and may include adjustable straps or bands to secure the fit. Proper sizing often requires measuring the head circumference and considering ear-to-ear width and nape length.

Care and maintenance extend the life of a wig. Synthetic wigs are typically washed less frequently and with cooler water using wig-specific products; human-hair wigs can be washed with regular shampoos but require conditioning and occasional styling with heat if appropriate. Wigs should be dried on a stand and stored away from direct sun or heat.

In modern contexts, perukas are widely available as ready-to-wear items, custom-made pieces, or medical wigs, reflecting a balance of practicality, fashion, and personal expression.
