Synthetic wigs are usually made from modacrylic or other durable fibers and tend to hold their shape after minimal maintenance. Human-hair wigs use real hair and require more care but can be styled with heat tools. Wigs are often built on caps that determine breathability and fit, including capless designs, lace-front styles for a natural hairline, full-lace caps for versatile styling, and monofilament tops for a scalp-like appearance.

There are fashion wigs intended for everyday wear, medical wigs supplied by charities or prosthetic suppliers, and theatrical or film wigs designed for character accuracy and durability. Availability ranges from low-cost synthetic options to high-end human-hair products.

Care varies by material. Synthetic wigs are usually washed with wig shampoo and air-dried on a stand; heat styling is limited or not advised. Human-hair wigs can be washed like natural hair and may tolerate light heat, but require conditioning and detangling. Proper storage protects shape and length.

Wigs have a long cultural history, from ancient civilizations to European courts, evolving into a global fashion item and a practical prosthesis for those experiencing hair loss.
