Permineralization is a fossilization process in which mineral-rich fluids seep into the pore spaces and internal channels of dead organisms, depositing minerals that preserve the original structure. In permineralized fossils, the organic material may remain in place while minerals fill or replace the spaces within tissues, sometimes retaining fine cellular details.

The process typically requires burial of the organism in sediment, followed by groundwater that carries dissolved minerals such as silica, calcite, pyrite, or apatite. As the mineral-rich water circulates through the remains, minerals precipitate from solution and fill voids, lumina, and vessels. Depending on chemistry and conditions, the original tissue may be partly dissolved and replaced, or it may be preserved as an internal mold that is infilled by minerals. Permineralization often yields a three-dimensional replica of the original anatomy with substantial structural integrity.

Permineralized fossils are especially valuable because they can preserve microscopic features not retained by other fossilization modes, such as fine cellular or anatomical details in wood, bone, or hard tissues. They are distinct from other forms of fossilization, such as replacement (where original material is dissolved and replaced by minerals) and molds or casts (which record the external shape). Common examples include petrified wood and fossilized bones, where mineral infill or replacement preserves detailed morphology for study.
