Peritoneaalidialyysihoitoon, known in English as peritoneal dialysis, is a medical procedure used to treat patients with end-stage kidney disease or severe chronic kidney failure. It is a form of dialysis that utilizes the patient’s peritoneum—a naturally occurring membrane in the abdominal cavity—as a filter to remove waste products and excess fluid from the blood when the kidneys are no longer functioning adequately.

The procedure involves the infusion of a sterile dialysis solution into the peritoneal cavity through a catheter. This solution dwells in the abdomen for a prescribed period, allowing waste substances, electrolytes, and excess water to pass from the blood across the peritoneal membrane into the solution by dialysis. After the dwell time, the fluid, now containing waste products, is drained out and replaced with fresh solution. This process can be performed manually several times a day (continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, CAPD) or automatically overnight using a machine (automated peritoneal dialysis, APD).

Peritoneal dialysis offers several advantages, including greater independence for patients, the convenience of performing it at home, and more stable blood chemistry compared to hemodialysis. However, it also requires strict sterile technique to prevent infections, particularly peritonitis, which is an inflammation of the peritoneum.

This form of dialysis is suitable for many patients, though it may not be appropriate for individuals with certain abdominal conditions or infections. The choice between peritoneal dialysis and other dialysis options is determined on an individual basis, considering medical factors and lifestyle preferences.
