Peripatus, commonly known as velvet worms, are a phylum of terrestrial invertebrates belonging to the Onychophora. They are characterized by their elongated, segmented bodies covered in velvety papillae. These creatures possess multiple pairs of stubby, unjointed legs, each tipped with claws. A distinguishing feature of peripatus is their ability to eject a sticky slime from specialized oral papillae, which they use to ensnare prey such as insects and other invertebrates. This slime hardens upon contact with air, immobilizing the victim.

Peripatus are found in humid, dark environments, typically under decaying logs, leaf litter, and rocks in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. They are nocturnal predators, actively hunting their food during the night. Reproduction in peripatus can be either oviparous (egg-laying) or viviparous (live-bearing), with varying modes of development depending on the species. Their ancient lineage and unique morphology make them of significant interest to evolutionary biologists. Despite their unique adaptations, many peripatus species face threats from habitat destruction and climate change.
