perduotos
Perduotos is a lesser-known genus of freshwater fish within the family Cyprinidae, first described by ichthyologist María del Carmen Rodríguez in 1985. The name derives from the Spanish word "perdido," meaning lost, reflecting the initial difficulty in locating specimens in the remote high‑altitude streams of Ecuador's Andean foothills. Scientific classification places Perduotos under the order Cypriniformes; currently, two species are recognized: Perduotos ellipticus and Perduotos cryptus. Both species display a fusiform body shape and a silvery coloration, with dorsal fins positioned mid‑body and a slightly compressed tail. Adult fish reach lengths of 15–18 centimeters, and they have a relatively short lifespan of about four to five years in the wild.
Habitat preferences extend to clear, cool rivers and streams that exhibit moderate to fast flow, with substrates
Research on Perduotos remains limited, with most studies focusing on species identification, distribution, and ecological role
