Perceuses are handheld or benchtop rotary power tools designed to create holes in materials by rotating a drill bit. Most modern perceuses are electric, drawing power from mains or a rechargeable battery. They combine rotation with torque and, in some models, percussion to help penetration, which is particularly useful for masonry.

Common types include corded electric drills, cordless drills, hammer drills, and drill presses. Corded drills offer continuous power, cordless models provide mobility, hammer drills add percussive impact to bore into concrete and brick, and drill presses provide precise, stable hole making in workshop settings. Some models integrate adjustable clutches and variable speed to adapt to different materials and bit sizes.

Bits are held in a chuck, often standardized to a range such as 1.5–13 mm or 3/16–1/2 inch depending on the tool. Types of bits include twist bits for wood and metal, masonry bits for concrete, and specialized bits for plastics or drywall. Bit materials range from high-speed steel to cobalt or carbide-tipped for harder materials. Selecting the right bit, speed, and feed pressure is essential for clean holes and tool longevity.

Safety and maintenance are important. Secure the workpiece, wear eye protection, and unplug before changing bits. Start at low speed and progress gradually, keeping the tool perpendicular to the work surface. Use appropriate bits for the material and apply lubrication when required. Regularly inspect the chuck, clean dust, and recharge or replace batteries as needed.
