A pentacle is a symbol consisting of a five-pointed star (a pentagram) enclosed within a circle. The term commonly refers to the pentagram inside a circle and to talismans bearing that symbol; the plain star alone is often called a pentagram. The circle is commonly seen as representing protection or the unity of life.

Etymology: Pentacle comes from Latin pentaculum, from Greek pente “five” and akron “end,” via Old French. Some traditions distinguish pentacle from pentagram, while others use the terms interchangeably.

Historical and contemporary use: Pentacles appear in Western ceremonial magic and occult literature as talismans or seals. Medieval and Renaissance grimoires, such as The Key of Solomon, describe pentacles for protection or summoning. In modern neopaganism, especially Wicca, the pentacle is a central symbol on altars and in ritual, representing the elements and spirit.

Symbolism and variation: The five points are often linked to earth, air, fire, water, and spirit; the circle may symbolize unity or protection. Orientation varies: upward-pointing pentacles are common in many traditions, while inverted forms have different symbolic meanings in some contexts. Pentacles may be plain or inscribed with sigils, names, or deities. In popular culture, they are widely associated with magic and occult imagery.
