The fundamental principle of penetrant testing involves the capillary action of a liquid to enter and remain in surface flaws.

The process typically begins with cleaning the surface of the test object to remove any contaminants that might interfere with the penetrant. A liquid penetrant, which is often colored or fluorescent, is then applied to the surface. After a sufficient dwell time, allowing the penetrant to seep into any cracks or voids, the excess penetrant is removed from the surface. A developer is then applied, which draws the trapped penetrant out of the defects, making them visible against the developer background. The indications are then inspected under appropriate lighting conditions, which may include ultraviolet light for fluorescent penetrants.

Penetrant testing is effective in detecting surface-breaking discontinuities such as cracks, laps, seams, and porosity. It is a relatively simple and cost-effective NDT method, making it suitable for a wide range of applications, from manufacturing quality control to in-service inspections. However, it is limited to detecting defects that are open to the surface and cannot reveal subsurface flaws. Proper surface preparation and adherence to established procedures are crucial for accurate results.
