A pendelmekanism, often translated as pendulum mechanism, is a device that utilizes a swinging weight, known as a pendulum, to regulate time. The consistent, predictable swing of a pendulum forms the basis for its operation. In its simplest form, a pendulum consists of a bob attached to a string or rod, suspended from a pivot point. When displaced from its equilibrium position and released, the pendulum oscillates back and forth.

The period of oscillation, which is the time it takes for one complete swing, is primarily determined by the length of the pendulum and the acceleration due to gravity. This inherent regularity makes the pendulum an excellent timekeeping element. Early pendelmekanismer were developed by Christiaan Huygens in the 17th century, revolutionizing clockmaking by significantly improving accuracy.

In mechanical clocks, the pendulum is typically connected to an escapement mechanism. The escapement allows the pendulum to swing freely while also imparting small pushes of energy to keep it in motion and, in turn, to drive the clock's gears at a controlled rate. The ticking sound of a clock is often the audible result of the escapement engaging with the pendulum. Variations in pendelmekanismer exist, including different pendulum lengths and designs, but the fundamental principle of using gravity and inertia to create a regular oscillation remains constant.
