The term is informal and overlaps with established terms such as dynamo, pedelec, and pedal-assist.

Historically, bicycles used dynamo generators driven by pedaling to power lights. Modern pedalelectric concepts expand on this idea by integrating efficient generators, energy storage, and power-management electronics to store energy in batteries or capacitors for later use, or to supplement an electric motor. In many discussions, pedalelectric also refers to pedal-assisted propulsion where motor assist is activated by pedaling and controlled by sensors and controllers.

Technology and components commonly involved include a pedal-driven generator or motor assist unit, energy storage such as batteries or supercapacitors, and electronic controllers that manage power flow and efficiency. Systems may be designed to harvest energy during rides, provide on-board charging for devices, or deliver assistance to reduce rider effort on hills or long commutes.
