Passikontrolli, or passport control, is the border control process of verifying the identity and travel documents of people crossing international borders. It is carried out at entry and exit points such as airports, seaports, and border crossings. The aim is to confirm the traveler’s identity, determine admissibility, verify visas or residence permits when required, and detect individuals who may be subject to restrictions or removal.

During passikontrolli, travelers present documents such as passports, national ID cards, visas, or residence permits. Border officers examine the documents for validity, compare the holder’s identity with the photograph, and check that the person has the right to enter, stay, or transit. Additional checks may include questioning about the purpose and duration of travel, examining watch lists, and recording entry and exit data. Modern systems may employ biometric data, automated gates, and digital records, and stamps or electronic marks may indicate the border status.

Regional variations exist. In many places, passport control is routine at external borders but not at internal borders. In the European Union and the Schengen Area, border checks between member states have been largely removed for short-term travelers, while checks at external borders remain mandatory for non-EU or non-Schengen travelers. Other countries maintain regular passport checks at all points of entry. Processing is usually carried out by border guards or immigration authorities and is governed by national laws, with privacy and data-protection rules applying.

In Finland and some Nordic contexts, passikontrolli is handled by border guard authorities at external borders, with heightened procedures for non-Schengen entrants and often lighter checks for internal border areas.
