Partsprogram, or part program, is a sequence of machine instructions used to manufacture a specific part on CNC equipment and other automated manufacturing systems. The program guides the machine through a planned set of operations, including movements, tool changes, spindle control, speeds and feeds, and coolant activation.

A parts program contains the geometric definition of the part as produced, the tool paths that remove material, the tool library, and the machine setup information such as work coordinate systems, fixtures, zero offsets, and inspection points. It may also specify probing routines and post-operation deburring or finish steps.

Formats and generation: CNC programs are most commonly written in G-code (ISO 6983) or created by CAM software that post-processes a CAD model into machine-readable instructions. Some controls use conversational or proprietary formats. Files are usually stored as text with extensions such as .nc, .tap, .g, or .txt, and can be generated, edited, or imported into a machine's controller.

Process and use: The part program is loaded into the machine, simulated or dry-run to verify paths, then executed on the shop floor. In-process measurement and post-processing ensure tolerance and surface finish specifications are met. Programs are maintained in a library, versioned, and updated when tooling, fixtures, or part tolerances change.

Applications and context: Part programs are fundamental to milling, turning, drilling, and multi-axis machining, as well as robotic cell automation. They enable repeatable production of complex parts and support efficiency through reuse, standardization, and documentation. Best practices include clear comments, consistent offsets, tool libraries, and adherence to safety and quality standards.
