A score is a written form of a musical composition, showing all the vocal and instrumental parts arranged vertically, one above the other. This allows a conductor to read and interpret the entire ensemble's music simultaneously, or for an individual musician to study the relationships between different parts. The term originates from the Italian word "partitura," meaning "distribution" or "arrangement."

Scores can vary greatly in complexity. A simple piece for a solo instrument might be represented by a single line of music. Larger orchestral works, however, can contain dozens of staves, each representing a different instrument or voice, making the score a dense and intricate document.
