It is typically described as a neutral scalar boson that can mediate interactions between the known particles and a hidden or dark sector. The concept is used in theoretical models to explore how new forces or components of the universe might couple to ordinary matter without contradicting existing experimental constraints.

In common formulations, particlemay has spin 0 and even parity (CP-even) or could appear as a CP-odd variant in pseudoscalar form. It couples to Standard Model fields through Yukawa-like interactions or higher-dimension operators, with a coupling strength parameter that varies by model. Its mass is a free parameter and can span a wide range, from sub-eV to well above the electroweak scale, depending on the scenario.

As a mediator, particlemay could enable connections between the visible sector and a dark sector, potentially producing observable signals such as resonant decays into photon pairs or lepton pairs, or inducing rare processes.
