Financial and property matters are usually handled in collaboration with a parish financial council, with the parochieraad contributing to budgeting and resource allocation and ensuring transparent financial practices. The council reports to the parish priest and, through him, to the diocesan hierarchy.

In the Netherlands and Belgium, the parochieraad is a standard element of parish governance within the Catholic Church. The exact organization may differ by diocese. In other Dutch-speaking church contexts, similar advisory bodies exist under different names, such as the kerkenraad in the Dutch Reformed Church.
