Parochieraad

Parochieraad is the Dutch term for the parish council in a Roman Catholic parish in Dutch-speaking regions. It is a governance body that supports the parish priest in translating diocesan priorities into local pastoral activity and parish life. The council typically includes the parish priest and lay representatives elected by the parish community; in some cases, additional members may be appointed by the bishop. The exact composition and powers can vary by diocese.

The parochieraad acts as an advisory and coordinating body. Its tasks include pastoral planning and oversight of liturgical life, catechesis and religious education, youth and family work, pastoral care for the sick and elderly, hospitality and outreach to the local community, and ensuring clear communication with parishioners. It helps prepare and implement a parish annual plan, develops programming, and coordinates volunteers and parish committees.

Financial and property matters are usually handled in collaboration with a parish financial council, with the parochieraad contributing to budgeting and resource allocation and ensuring transparent financial practices. The council reports to the parish priest and, through him, to the diocesan hierarchy.

In the Netherlands and Belgium, the parochieraad is a standard element of parish governance within the Catholic Church. The exact organization may differ by diocese. In other Dutch-speaking church contexts, similar advisory bodies exist under different names, such as the kerkenraad in the Dutch Reformed Church.
