Parallaxbased is a term used to describe phenomena or applications that utilize the principle of parallax. Parallax refers to the apparent displacement of an object when viewed from two different positions. In photography and videography, a parallax effect can be intentionally created or can be an undesirable artifact. In astronomy, parallax is a crucial method for measuring the distances to stars. By observing a star from two different points in Earth's orbit around the Sun (typically six months apart), astronomers can measure the star's apparent shift against more distant background stars. This angular shift, known as stellar parallax, can then be used with trigonometry to calculate the star's distance.

More recently, parallax has found applications in computer graphics and virtual reality. Parallax scrolling is a technique where background images move at different speeds than foreground images, creating an illusion of depth and immersion. This technique is commonly used in website design and video games. In VR, accurate tracking of head movements and the corresponding visual parallax are essential for creating a convincing sense of presence.
