Paralinguistics is the study of the nonverbal elements that accompany spoken language and influence its meaning without being part of the words themselves. It focuses on paralinguistic features such as prosody (intonation, pitch, rhythm, tempo), voice quality (breathiness, creak, tension), volume, and speech rate, as well as nonlexical vocalizations like laughter, sighs, pauses, and hesitations. Together, these cues can modify, reinforce, or contradict the literal content of utterances and convey emotion, attitude, social stance, politeness, intention, and deception.

Paralinguistic signals operate across languages and cultures, though their norms and interpretations vary. For example, rising intonation can indicate a question in many languages, while loudness may signal emphasis or anger. Cultural context shapes how cues are produced and understood, and individual differences can affect interpretation.

In research and applied fields, paralinguistics intersects with phonetics, sociolinguistics, psychology, and communication studies. Methods include acoustic analysis of pitch, duration, and intensity, as well as perceptual experiments and conversational analysis. Applications span speech synthesis and recognition, where natural-sounding prosody is important; human–computer interaction; clinical assessment of voice disorders; and forensic phonetics.

Limitations include the potential for misinterpretation, given the high context-dependence of paralinguistic cues. Interpretation often relies on the broader linguistic content and situational context, making paralinguistic cues part of a joint message delivery rather than standalone signals.
