Papermakers are workers who manufacture paper from fibrous materials, encompassing both industrial mill operators and artisans practicing handmade papermaking. In modern industry, papermakers oversee stock preparation, formation, pressing, and drying to produce uniform sheets of paper. In traditional craft, papermakers form sheets by hand, using screens, plant fibers, and controlled drying to create bespoke papers. The field covers chemical and mechanical pulping, beating and refining the stock, sizing and surface treatments, and finishing operations such as calendering and coating.

History and scope: Papermaking originated in China and spread through the Islamic world to Europe, evolving from hand processes to mechanized production in the 19th century. Today, papermakers work in integrated mills, specialty plants, and artisanal studios, producing a wide range of products including printing papers, packaging boards, tissues, and specialty or art papers.

Processes and materials: Wood and non-wood fibers are prepared through chipping, pulping, and refining to create a furnish with desired fiber characteristics. The furnish is formed into a continuous sheet on a paper machine or into individual sheets in crafts settings. The sheet is pressed to remove water, dried on rollers or air-dried, and finished by calendering, coating, or sizing to achieve target properties such as strength, brightness, texture, and printability. Environmental controls address water reuse, effluent treatment, energy use, and fiber recycling.

Skills and training: Papermakers require knowledge of pulping chemistry, furnish optimization, machine operation, quality control, and safety. They may work with recycled fiber, bleached pulps, or specialty fibers for products ranging from printing papers to packaging materials and filtration papers.
