Palpitate is a verb meaning to beat rapidly, flutter, or throb, especially the heart, but it can also refer to trembling or agitation in a broader emotional sense. The term derives from Latin palpitare, meaning to beat or throb.

In medical use, palpitation describes the subjective sensation that the heart is racing, pounding, fluttering, or skipping beats. Palpitations are common and often benign, particularly in healthy individuals, but they can indicate underlying conditions such as cardiac arrhythmias, electrolyte disturbances, anemia, or thyroid disorders. Common triggers include caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, stimulants, anxiety or stress, dehydration, fever, certain medications, and intense physical exertion.

Evaluation of palpitations typically involves a clinical history and physical examination, followed by tests such as electrocardiography (ECG). Longer-term monitoring with a Holter or event monitor, and blood tests to assess thyroid function, blood counts, and electrolyte levels, may be used to identify causes. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may range from lifestyle modifications (reducing caffeine and alcohol, adequate hydration, stress management) to medical therapy. In cases associated with known heart rhythm disorders, medications such as beta blockers or antiarrhythmic agents, and, rarely, invasive procedures, may be indicated.

Palpitate as a verb may appear in both medical and everyday language to describe the sensation of a heartbeat that feels abnormal or emotionally heightened. While most instances are harmless, urgent evaluation is advised if palpitations accompany chest pain, fainting, severe shortness of breath, or a history of heart disease.
