Pallisering refers to the construction or installation of a palisade, a defensive or boundary barrier formed by vertical wooden stakes (pales) driven into the ground and often linked by horizontal rails. The term derives from the French palissade, meaning a fence of stakes, and is used in Dutch and related languages to describe the technique or its outcome.

Historically, palisades were widely employed in Europe and other regions from antiquity through the early modern period. They served as stockades around villages and fortifications, enclosures for fields or gardens, and temporary camps for armies. Palisades could be combined with ditches or earthen ramparts for added defense and were sometimes layered with rails or woven elements to improve stability.

Construction and materials typically involve sharpening or shaping vertical posts and planting them in closely spaced sequences. Posts may be connected by horizontal rails or bound together with bindings, and sometimes reinforced with additional structures to deter climbing. Durable woods such as oak, pine, or larch were common choices, chosen for strength and availability. In some cases metal clamps or bindings were used to stiffen the barrier.

Modern usage of pallisering persists in perimeter fencing and landscape design. Wooden palisade fences remain popular for rural boundaries, historical recreations, or security purposes, while metal or composite variants may imitate traditional palisading for durability and lower maintenance. The concept also appears in archaeological contexts, where post-hole patterns and trench remnants help identify formerly palisaded enclosures and their social or defensive functions.
