Palaeoklimatiske is an adjective used to describe aspects connected with palaeoclimatology, the study of ancient climates. It denotes data, records, processes, or interpretations about climate conditions in geological timescales, prior to instrumental weather observations.

Palaeoklimatiske reconstructions rely on proxy records such as ice cores, marine and lacustrine sediments, pollen and spores, plant macrofossils, speleothems, corals, and dendrochronological data. Isotopic ratios (for example oxygen-18 to oxygen-16) and trace elements serve as temperature and precipitation indicators; growth-ring width, stomatal density, and macrofossil assemblages provide moisture and seasonality signals.

Radiometric dating, magnetostratigraphy, varve chronology, and astrochronology establish age models.

The field investigates natural climate variability and the drivers of past changes, including orbital forcing, greenhouse gas concentrations, plate tectonics, volcanic activity, and feedback mechanisms. Palaeoklimatiske studies help test climate models, estimate climate sensitivity, and establish baseline conditions for the pre-industrial era, informing projections of future change and the understanding of abrupt events such as deglacial warming, the PETM, or the Younger Dryas.

Limitations include dating uncertainties, proxy resolution, regional biases, and interpretive ambiguity. Syntheses combine multiple proxies to produce regional or global palaeoclimatic reconstructions, often integrated with paleogeography and oceanography. Data and findings are shared through scientific databases and reviews, contributing to a comprehensive picture of Earth’s climate history.
