Painesähköisiä, often translated as piezoelectricity, is an electrical phenomenon exhibited by certain crystalline materials. When subjected to mechanical stress, these materials generate an electric charge. Conversely, when an electric field is applied to them, they deform mechanically. This property arises from the asymmetrical arrangement of ions within the crystal lattice, which causes a net electric dipole moment.

The piezoelectric effect can be broadly categorized into two types: the direct piezoelectric effect and the converse piezoelectric effect. The direct effect is when mechanical stress produces an electric charge, while the converse effect is when an electric field causes mechanical strain. Both effects are reversible and occur simultaneously in piezoelectric materials.

Common examples of piezoelectric materials include quartz, Rochelle salt, and various ceramics like lead zirconate titanate (PZT). These materials are employed in a wide range of applications. In sensors, the direct piezoelectric effect is utilized to convert physical quantities like pressure, acceleration, or vibration into electrical signals. In actuators, the converse piezoelectric effect is used to create precise movements or vibrations.

Applications of piezoelectricity are diverse, spanning from everyday items like lighters and gas grills (where a hammer strikes a piezoelectric crystal to create a spark) to sophisticated technologies such as ultrasonic transducers in medical imaging and sonar, atomic force microscopes, and high-frequency filters in electronic devices. The ability of these materials to efficiently convert mechanical energy to electrical energy and vice versa makes them invaluable in modern technology.
