The molecule consists of a toluene ring (methylbenzene) substituted with a nitro group (-NO₂) at the para position relative to the methyl group (-CH₃).

p-Nitrotoluene is primarily used as an intermediate in the synthesis of various chemicals, including pharmaceuticals, dyes, and agrochemicals. One of its most significant applications is in the production of para-toluidine, an important precursor for rubber chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and other organic compounds. It is also a precursor to certain explosives, such as trinitrotoluene (TNT), though it is not itself an explosive.

The compound is typically prepared by nitrating toluene with a mixture of concentrated nitric acid (HNO₃) and sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) under controlled conditions. The reaction favors the para isomer due to the electron-donating effect of the methyl group, which stabilizes the intermediate carbocation formed during nitration.

p-Nitrotoluene is soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and acetone but has limited solubility in water. It exhibits moderate toxicity, and exposure should be minimized due to potential health risks, including irritation of the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. In industrial settings, p-nitrotoluene is often handled as a liquid or dissolved in a suitable solvent to facilitate processing. Its physical properties, such as a melting point of approximately 52–54°C and a boiling point of around 235–238°C, influence its storage and transportation requirements.
